World Photography Day: A Global Celebration of Vision and Creativity - With NAA and AIM

By Prabuddha Ghosh

World Photography Day offers an opportunity to celebrate photography not merely as a technical practice or artistic discipline, but as one of the most powerful visual languages of human expression. A photograph can preserve a fleeting moment, document history, communicate emotion and connect people across geographical, cultural and linguistic boundaries. With this spirit, the National Artists’ Association (NAA) and Art Insight Medium (AIM) jointly presented an International Photography Exhibition to mark this significant occasion.

The exhibition brought together an impressive community of 75 photography artists, including 20 distinguished invited photographers representing 13 countries. A total of 150 photographic works were presented, reflecting diverse approaches, subjects, techniques and visual sensibilities. The exhibition was further enriched by the inclusion of 10 remarkable photographs from landmark archives, creating an engaging dialogue between photography's historical legacy and its contemporary possibilities.

The curatorial process itself was an enriching journey of observation, selection and visual engagement. The exhibition was jointly curated by Mr. Atul Padia and myself, with the catalogue design thoughtfully conceived by Atul Ji. The visual presentation of an exhibition catalogue is equally important, as it becomes a lasting document of the creative journey and the participating artists. The striking image featured on the back cover has been graciously provided by Mr. Senaritra Dutta, adding another distinctive visual dimension to the publication.

Organising an international exhibition of this nature is always a collective endeavour. My sincere gratitude goes to Mr. Ajay Jadhav and Mr. Rajiv Kapoor for their valuable support, cooperation and encouragement throughout the process. Their contribution helped transform an ambitious idea into a meaningful platform for photographers and photography enthusiasts.

What makes photography particularly relevant today is its extraordinary ability to function simultaneously as documentation, artistic interpretation and social communication. In an increasingly image-driven world, photographs influence how we remember the past, understand the present and imagine the future. From intimate personal narratives to powerful records of society, environment, culture and human experience, photography continues to expand its vocabulary and relevance.

The diversity represented in this exhibition demonstrates that photography has no single language or boundary. Every participating artist brings an individual perspective, transforming observation into visual expression. Some images capture extraordinary moments; others discover beauty in ordinary surroundings. Together, they form a rich visual conversation that reflects the diversity of human experience.

I am particularly delighted to share some of my personal selections from this remarkable collection—works that I found distinctive, thought-provoking and visually outstanding. I invite viewers to enjoy this exciting visual journey and explore the creativity represented by photographers from different parts of the world. The complete exhibition catalogue is also available through the link provided.

As we celebrate World Photography Day, let us continue to recognise photography as far more than a profession, hobby or art form. It is a medium of memory, creativity, documentation and transformation—a powerful force capable of inspiring dialogue and connecting humanity.

Raghu Rai: The Unflinching Eye That Framed India’s Conscience by Prabuddha Ghosh

Raghu Rai: The Unflinching Eye That Framed India’s Conscience by Prabuddha Ghosh In the long and unsettled narrative of modern India, few visual chroniclers have worked with the moral clarity, emotional depth, and sustained intensity of Raghu Rai. To speak of him merely as a photographer is to understate the scope of his engagement. He is, more precisely, a witness to India’s becoming—its fractures, its continuities, its silences, and its eruptions. Across decades, his lens has moved with a rare steadiness through the country’s most defining moments, refusing spectacle while never relinquishing the power of the image. Born on 18 December 1942 in Jhang, in undivided Punjab—now in Pakistan—Rai belonged to a generation marked indelibly by the trauma of Partition. Geography, for him, was never inert. It was memory, rupture, and inheritance. Punjab was not simply a birthplace; it was a divided consciousness. That inheritance would quietly shape his sensibility. There is, in his work, an unm...

A Timeless Gaze, A Global Ascent: When Raja Ravi Varma Redefined the Place of Indian Art by Prabuddha Ghosh

A Timeless Gaze, A Global Ascent: When Raja Ravi Varma Redefined the Place of Indian Art by Prabuddha Ghosh ( The recent sale of Yashoda and Krishna by Raja Ravi Varma marks a defining moment in the trajectory of Indian art. Achieving an unprecedented ₹167.2 crore at Saffronart ’s Spring Live Auction in Mumbai, the painting has become the highest-valued work of Indian art ever sold. Acquired by Cyrus S. Poonawalla , it surpasses the earlier record set by M. F. Husain ’s Gram Yatra , indicating not only a shift in market dynamics but also a renewed cultural recognition. This article approaches the event as more than an auction milestone. It connects the sale to broader questions shaping the present and future of Indian art, including the evolution of collecting practices, the continued relevance of Varma’s legacy, the distinctive qualities of his paintings, the ongoing surge in the Indian art market, and the factors contributing to such extraordinary valuation. Drawing on current ...
